Plumber Stanford Merthyr

Cracked clay sewer junctions are the Stanford Merthyr plumber job that keeps coming back in this old pit village. It sits on the eastern side of Kurri Kurri, and Kurri Kurri Plumbing Co takes it in on the same run, clearing and camera-checking drains, swapping tired hot water units and quoting before any work starts.

A village built around one colliery. The weatherboard cottages here went up for colliery families, and the pit closed back in 1957, but the plumbing stayed. Census figures count 221 dwellings, nearly all of them separate houses, and their sewer connections still run through glazed clay lines laid in the early 1900s, long past their use-by.

Steel services rusting closed. In the least-renovated homes off Rhondda Street and Anvil Street, original galvanised steel is still in service and corroding from within. That shows up as dropping pressure and rusty taps before the pipe finally lets go. The fix is a new house service in poly or copper, quoted as its own job.

Tanks that go over in a batch. Plenty of village houses still run an ageing storage tank, and the first frosty snap of winter reliably takes out a batch of them in the oldest households. Mature backyard trees send roots after the moisture in the shallow sewers under these blocks, too, and root-choked clay mains push waste back through the lowest gullies and laundries when the grid surcharges in a storm.
